Mende<\/strong>\uff1aSo, today’s topic of conversation is “What is your favorite season of the year?” So… What is your favorite season of the year?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aSpring.\u00a0 Especially early spring.\u00a0 Plants are shooting up, budding cherry blossoms, trees covered in pastel pink flowers.\u00a0 It makes me feel so excited.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Mende<\/strong>\uff1aYou could almost say late winter.\u00a0 Where did you grow up?\u00a0 Did you wait out long, dark winters for springtime?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aI am from Tokyo.\u00a0 Since I take care of many plants, I have really become more conscious of the seasons.\u00a0 What is your favorite season of the year?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aWhen I was growing up it was probably summer.\u00a0\u00a0 During the last few years of elementary school I took up playing music, after that I really began to enjoy the fall.\u00a0 The turning of colors and preparations for the long and lonely winter ahead is very moving.\u00a0 I think I’m a romanticist.\u00a0 The fish tail rows of light, fluffy clouds are very different from the aggressive thunder clouds of the summer season.\u00a0 These clouds reveal the first glimpses of autumn.\u00a0 Although, I really don’t dislike any season of the year, which is my real answer, but I do love the cultural atmosphere of the fall season.\u00a0 I think it is the real season of love.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aI think the saying goes that people fall in love and the spring and break up in the autumn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Mende<\/strong>\uff1aWhen I was younger I never liked the confused and hazy feeling of anticipation during the spring.\u00a0 I`m not sure when, but sometime as an adult I started to like springtime.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aWhat changed your mind?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aAge, probably.\u00a0 I like to take walks and I look on the ground for small, budding flowers.\u00a0 Finding one makes me really happy.\u00a0 I have a large-flowering magnolia at home with big white flowers that bloom.\u00a0\u00a0 I eagerly check it everyday during the season when it has so many buds.\u00a0 When my flowering citron or olive tree blooms all different types of bees start buzzing around.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aWatching the bees pleasantly buzzing around makes me feel happy, too.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1a\u00a0I think the seasons of the year start with spring and end in the winter.\u00a0 Spring is a season of beginnings.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aYes, I think so, too.\u00a0 Although because of the COVID-19 things will probably change is what the news media is saying.\u00a0 I think starting the school year in the fall seems very strange to many Japanese.\u00a0 I think this is because we put so much importance on the seasons of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aEven in the desert there are seasons.\u00a0 Singapore even has seasons, but I think the sentiment placed on the seasons of the year by the Japanese is very different.\u00a0 Japan has four very distinct seasons and we are very lucky to experience and feel these changes.\u00a0 Our new office has very big windows!\u00a0 Visually, it is very open like an open-air veranda.\u00a0 The scenery is always changing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aI love to eat my lunch and just enjoy the scenery.\u00a0 Oh!\u00a0 By the way, do the seasons affect what you eat?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende\uff1a<\/strong>I really like eggplant, but recently you can buy it anytime of the year.\u00a0 However, that seems to be the case with many things.\u00a0 We can buy many things out of season, now.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aAt home, my strawberry plant is ripe and ready to eat, but many children think it is a winter food.\u00a0 Modern life is very convenient, but confusing.\u00a0 I really want to be more conscious of the seasons.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aWhat season do most Japanese prefer?\u00a0 Probably spring.\u00a0 I don’t think many really like winter, is my impression.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aI think it is probably dispersed evenly, but it would be an interesting questionnaire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aLet’s have a go with the LPA staff.\u00a0 I wonder how the Singapore and Hong Kong staff will respond?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Results of the internal LPA staff (Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong) questionnaire show differences depending on location.\u00a0 Nobody on the Hong Kong staff selected spring.\u00a0 In Singapore the rainy season\u00a0 was also selected.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aWhat kind of lighting is designed to be conscious of the seasons?\u00a0 I think some lighting to go along with the summer sunset would be nice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aIf there is a place that already has natural light, simulating these effects with artificial light will just look fake.\u00a0 Sometimes it is simulated in underground spaces.\u00a0 Simulating natural light is not just about color temperature, but creating shadows is also important.\u00a0 There are winter shadows and spring shadows.\u00a0 Recreating the shadows is the real fun and challenge.\u00a0 Lately, because of the Corona virus, you can really see the stars in Tokyo.\u00a0\u00a0 A long time ago, people used to tell the seasons of the year by the constellations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aI wish I could be more perceptive to these types of\u00a0 changes\u00a0 in daily life.\u00a0 I think some type of lighting could be designed in order to become more conscious of the seasons.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aDo you mean lighting that will make you want to view the stars? The name for the installation at Meiji Shrine during nighttime visitation hours, \u201cShadow Illumination,\u201d is an interesting word choice.\u00a0 By burning torches, the design seems to bring to light the dark shadows.\u00a0 It might be interesting if there was an artificial light that could make us realize that we could never beat the grandeur of natural light.\u00a0 Did you know that if you darken your room, moonlight will shine in.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yamaguchi<\/strong>\uff1aI never thought I would be able to experience moonlight in my own home.\u00a0 At home I mounted spotlights by the window to simulate moonlight, but I really want to experience real moonlight.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Mende<\/strong>\uff1aDuring the Heian Period they really appreciated the moon, especially the light reflected when the moon was shining on white sand.\u00a0\u00a0 Moonlight must also have been a seasonal experience.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
