{"id":24196,"date":"2013-02-27T17:06:33","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T08:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/?p=24196"},"modified":"2020-12-24T16:54:29","modified_gmt":"2020-12-24T07:54:29","slug":"coffeebreak-013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/en\/coffeebreak-013\/","title":{"rendered":"Vol.013 &#8211; The Enjoyment of Ikebana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interviewer:\u3000Takafumi Kubo<\/p>\n<div class=\"col35-right\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/TAK-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\u4e45\u4fdd\u3000\u9686\u6587\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/8169add18e93b0f7c94cd8e7fbe321c5-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"\u751f\u3051\u82b1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/66e091bc2d19932de79e174ad215915d-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\u751f\u3051\u82b1\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Mende :\u00a0 <\/strong>I heard that you practice Ikebana, or Japanese flower arrangement.\u00a0 What style are you learning?\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing that you find time when work is so busy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo : <\/strong>I am learning the Sogetsu style of Ikebana.\u00a0\u00a0 We work with not only classical flower\u00a0 types, but also pursue innovative and unique expressions with flowers.\u00a0 It is very interesting.\u00a0 I also had a piece displayed at an exhibit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mende :\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0I don&#8217;t think I got an invitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo :\u00a0 <\/strong>Sorry about that.\u00a0 Working with flowers is very invigorating.\u00a0 I feel like a student again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mende :\u00a0 <\/strong>What do you learn at your lessons?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo : <\/strong>\u00a0Generally, a\u00a0 basic flower arrangement is\u00a0 arranged with three branches and flowers.\u00a0 The three branches are labeled, Shin, Soe, and Hikae.\u00a0 Depending on the length of a branch, angle of insertion, how one displays the water, how branches are hung, and other factors, each arrangement looks different.\u00a0 So even if we all used the same flowers, there would never be two arrangements that are the same.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So even if one is not very good, if they fill the requirements, it is a flower arrangement.\u00a0\u00a0 It is very interesting.<\/p>\n<p>What do you do at your Shinnai lessons (Japanese\u00a0 theatrical music\u00a0 lessons)?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mende :\u00a0<\/strong>The teacher for our Shinnai lessons is an older gentleman and we basically just mimic what he sing-says.\u00a0 So we basically try to come as close as we can to what and how our teacher does everything.\u00a0 So, it is a little bit different than ikebana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo :\u00a0<\/strong>The topic of conversation has turned to our hobbies.\u00a0 What I really wanted to talk about is lighting and flower arrangements.\u00a0\u00a0 For example, depending on the type of flower, finding the right combination of lighting factors to illuminate an arrangement such as, type of light source, color temperature, or angles of exposure, sounds like a very interesting pursuit.\u00a0 Kind of like how you seek to find the perfect lighting\u00a0 for different architectural structures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mende :\u00a0<\/strong>Ikebana seems to resemble architecture in terms of a physical end product.\u00a0 When I was just starting out, I\u00a0 did the lighting for one of Mr. Sofu Teshigahara`s\u00a0 installations.\u00a0\u00a0 He used mostly bamboo, so it resembled something similar to architecture.\u00a0\u00a0 I put a lot of effort into trying to express the form in a\u00a0 3-dimensional manner.\u00a0 Not just flowers, but coloring is also important when displaying, say, pottery.\u00a0 I also worked on the lighting for Mr. Seimei Tsuji`s exhibit, which I put a tremendous amount of effort into beautifully presenting the colors of the fired pottery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo :\u00a0<\/strong>Whether the object to be illuminated is architecture, flowers, or pottery the important question in lighting design is what is most important to the subject? What do you want people to see or feel?\u00a0 Lighting design is not a material object, but rather designing an atmosphere or a suggestion of something.\u00a0 Flower arrangement is the opposite.\u00a0 We are designing something physical.\u00a0\u00a0 Have you ever thought of using light fixtures to create a sculptural design?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mende :\u00a0<\/strong>No, not really, but I think I could really put something together.\u00a0 However, when looking at the collections of some of the finest sculptors I don`t think I stand a chance.\u00a0\u00a0 You said flower arrangement is a physical design, but you don&#8217;t do pre-sketches or drafts before starting do you?\u00a0 It seems like it is a very spontaneous process, like you are creating a world or air of your own in that moment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo :\u00a0<\/strong>Well, maybe so.\u00a0 At the end of a lighting design project we go on-site to do final focusing.\u00a0 Focusing is a very impromptu manner.\u00a0 Flower arrangement might be similar to this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mende : <\/strong>Yes, maybe so.\u00a0\u00a0 Just like in the way you cut and arrange flowers, each fixture, one by one,\u00a0 is aligned, adjusted,\u00a0 and aimed at the subject to illuminate.\u00a0 Yes, this manner might be similar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kubo : <\/strong>\u00a0I really like flower arrangement, but I think I understand the enjoyment of lighting design a little bit more.\u00a0 Thank you for our talk today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interviewer:\u3000Takafumi Kubo Mende :\u00a0 I heard that you practice Ikebana, or Japanese flower arrangement.\u00a0 What style are you learning?\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing that you find time when work is so busy.
