That&#8217;s amazing!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>Although there were moments of danger, we even invented things to ride on and makeshift forts.\u00a0\u00a0 One time, we wanted to climb a tree so we built an elevator-like contraption, but we fell out of the tree and blood was everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0 Once I started jr. high school, I think I stayed home more.\u00a0 I used to build trains from HO Gauge,\u00a0 1\/80 train model sets.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>The trains were all hand-build?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>There were train wheels in the model kits, but I would make trestles and things out of construction paper.\u00a0\u00a0 The rich kids always had the better Tenshodo model sets, but they were too expensive.\u00a0 My friends and I were only able to buy the power locomotive and then we made the rest ourselves.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>Did you have stations, too?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>Oh, yes.\u00a0 We made stations and the surrounding townscape.\u00a0 Modeling materials are not cheap, so we all brought what we could and built it all together.\u00a0 It was pretty big, as I recall.\u00a0\u00a0 That is what we did indoors.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25040\" src=\"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1-1024x720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1-1536x1079.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1-800x562.jpg 800w, https:\/\/shomei-tanteidan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1b781fbb081142762b86a0b5808c33fb-1.jpg 1776w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>Outside I used to try to grab fish in a pond with my sister.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>You mean not fishing, but grabbed the fish with your hands.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>Yes. The bottom of the pond was very slimy, but we would walk right in and scoop them out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>That sounds a little dangerous.\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t somebody tell you not to go to that pond?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>Oh, yes, they told us, but the two of us went anyway.\u00a0 It was just a small pond in the garden of a local newspaper office building.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>Oh, it wasn&#8217;t a pond out in the countryside.\u00a0 You did grow up in the metropolis of Shenzhen, didn&#8217;t you?\u00a0 Did you make up any play?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>We used to make up scripts for playing house.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>I think we used to invent our play because we were not given very many toys to begin with.\u00a0\u00a0 We did some dangerous things though. \u00a0We had some firecrackers we used to call 2B.\u00a0 If we scratched the edge against a matchbox, and it would catch fire and end with a big bang a few seconds later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>Were you able to buy firecrackers?\u00a0 In China, they were only sold on the black market.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>I don&#8217;t know about now, but when I was younger they were sold at the local candy store.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>That is unbelievable now!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mende\uff1a<\/strong>We would light them and then quickly throw them somewhere.\u00a0 Things used to catch fire and somebody was always getting burned.\u00a0\u00a0 We did a lot of dangerous things we called to play.\u00a0 So when you become a dad, I think it is fine to let your kids play video games,\u00a0 but sometimes just give them a cardboard box to play with and let them think of something to do.\u00a0 I think you will be surprised.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ke\uff1a<\/strong>Childhood play and entertainment were very different for both of us.\u00a0\u00a0 If I ever have kids I want them to invent their own type of play.\u00a0 Also, be able to play outside and enjoy nature.\u00a0 Thank you for our talk today.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interviewer:\u00a0 Yonglin Ke Mende\uff1aAre we talking about childhood play today?
