Jiang<\/strong>: Today I’d like to talk about \u201cCinema Lighting.\u201d\u00a0 I think cinema lighting is very important.\u00a0 For example, I recently watched \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d\u00a0 and felt that light and shadow in cinema can really reveal various conditions of human psychology.\u00a0 Especially senses with intense contrast, light and shadow help create a very tense situation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong>: Yes, there are many dark scenes in this film.\u00a0 It is an impressive example of using light to symbolize human emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiang<\/strong><\/strong>: Yes.\u00a0 I was really impressed with how light is focused on the left side of the screen and the right side gradually becomes dark.\u00a0 I felt this represents the two-sided nature and internal turmoil of the characters.\u00a0 What kind of movies do you like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong><\/strong>:\u00a0I like films of various genres, but I was really moved by the French movie \u201cDiva.\u201d\u00a0 The use of natural light is beautiful.\u00a0 The softness and warmth of natural light really dictates the atmosphere of this film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiang<\/strong><\/strong>: This sounds like a film with many great scenes. I am curious about the balance of light and shadow.\u00a0By the way, films by the Taiwanese director, Edward Yang, are also very impressive.\u00a0 Lighting melts into the quiet everyday scenes of his films in a way that is very easy.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong><\/strong>: Taiwanese films certainly have a unique charm.\u00a0 Particularly, natural light is skillfully used to\u00a0create detailed scenes and atmospheres, unable to be reproduced with artificial lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiang<\/strong><\/strong>: \u201cA Brighter Summer Day\u201d is one of his famous films.\u00a0I like how the lighting in this film directs the story and emotions of the characters.\u00a0Have you ever thought about making a film?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong><\/strong>: I have some interest, but it seems like it would take an awful lot of energy. I think making a short film of 5 to 8 minutes would be a more realistic challenge. Particularly, I am interested in making a\u00a0film that would rely on light and shadow only to convey different emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiang<\/strong><\/strong>: Yes, a short film is probably more realistic.\u00a0 A film about light and shadow sounds interesting.\u00a0I think I am only suited for the viewing side of movies, but I find lots of inspiration from watching movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong><\/strong>: As a lighting designer,\u00a0there is a lot to learn about light and shadow from movies and film.\u00a0For example, compared to stage lighting or architectural lighting, scenes from a movie are detail-oriented and cut and shot specifically.\u00a0The quality of light, placement of shadows; everything is calculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiang<\/strong><\/strong>: Yes.\u00a0I think it would be fun to hold a cinema lighting internal competition with the LPA staff.\u00a0 Everyone could present a scene from a movie and make a case for the lighting.\u00a0It could be a chance for new discoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong><\/strong>: That is a good idea.\u00a0It might be fun for everyone to choose maybe a 5 second scene and give a short analysis of the light and shadow.\u00a0What scene would you choose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jiang<\/strong><\/strong>: I think I would go with the scene from \u201cThe Godfather\u201d\u00a0where Don Corleone is speaking in the dark.\u00a0The light shining from the left emphasizes both his air of authority and sense of isolation.\u00a0How about you?<\/p>\n\n\n

Mende<\/strong><\/strong>: The light and shadow in old black and white Japanese films by Yasujiro Ozu or Akira Kurosawa bring back many memories.\u00a0But I would probably go with \u201cDiva.\u201d\u00a0The beauty of natural light in this film is indescribable, particularly the bath scenes with light cutting through the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
