City Night Survey : Yokohama Minato Mirai<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yokohama Minato Mirai, which has seen rapid development in recent years with projects such as Japan\u2019s first urban circulation ropeway \u201cYOKOHAMA AIR CABIN\u201d launched last spring, the cruise ship terminal \u201cYokohama Hammerhead,\u201d and the prestigious Hawaiian luxury resort \u201cThe Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama.\u201d The purpose was supposed to be to investigate whether the \u201cnightscape of Minato Mirai,\u201d which could be considered a tourism resource in itself, has been well preserved\u2026 but.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0Relationship Between Zoning and Street Lighting<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minato Mirai area, which was developed on reclaimed land around Yokohama Port, can be broadly divided into three zones: the \u201cCentral District,\u201d the \u201cShinko District,\u201d and the \u201cYokohama Station East Exit District.\u201d Among these, our survey focused on the Central District\u2014with its high-rise buildings such as Landmark Tower and Queen\u2019s Square Towers\u2014and the Shinko District, which features many commercial and cultural facilities such as the Red Brick Warehouse and Yokohama Hammerhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When examining the street lighting in these two districts, it was found that the streets running parallel to the Rinko trunk road and the Metropolitan Expressway were lit with sodium-colored lamps, while the streets leading toward the port, such as Icho Street and Keyaki Street, were illuminated with streetlights at a color temperature of 4000\u20135000K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, this color temperature plan, which changes according to the direction of the streets, appears well-organized. However, according to the building color scheme guidelines for the Minato Mirai area, the Central District is designed with bright achromatic tones, while the Shinko District follows a warm color palette consistent with the red brick aesthetic (Minato Mirai 21 Shinko District Townscape and Landscape Guidelines). Considering this, I felt that aligning the streetlight color temperature plan with the building color scheme would have made the urban landscapes of each district stand out even more. \u25a0Minato Mirai under official energy-saving request<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coincidentally, the day we conducted our survey fell within a period when an official energy-saving request had been issued due to electricity shortages. The newly opened YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN, whose gondolas normally emit light in a variety of colors, was completely dark that night, making it difficult to tell from a distance where it was operating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, other iconic lighting elements that usually define the nightscape of Minato Mirai were turned off: the illuminations of the Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel, the floodlights of the InterContinental Hotel, the fa\u00e7ade lighting of Anniversaire, and the crown lighting of World Porters.<\/p>\n\n\n

Cosmo World felt rather deserted, so I asked a ticket sales staff member whether the energy-saving measures had affected visitor numbers. The answer was, \u201cThere has been no impact due to energysaving.\u201d This may have been because our survey was conducted on a weekday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a lighting perspective, even with the major light sources mentioned above turned off, when we measured the pavement illuminance walking from the Central District to the Shinko District, we still recorded around 15\u201330 lx. This was more than sufficient brightness for walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking around, there were people lingering quietly along the waterfront, and groups of skateboarders gathering near the Red Brick Warehouse. Local residents did not seem to feel saddened by Minato Mirai\u2019s dimmed nightscape; on the contrary, they may have found the less flamboyant brightness level more comfortable. \u25a0How to Create an Energy-Saving Nightscape as a City
While the iconic nightscape elements were turned off, we found that the circular plaza of Grand Mall Park, near Landmark Tower, was illuminated with an excessive 500 lx of brightness\u2014even though nobody was using the space at the time. Furthermore, the luminous columns there exceeded 1000 cd\/\u33a1, glaring so intensely that they almost pierced the eyes. I felt that this kind of unnecessary energy consumption could be redirected into more meaningful lighting elements, contributing to the Minato Mirai nightscape. It also seemed clear that the city needs to review and identify more precisely where energy-saving should actually take place.<\/p>\n\n\n

Because we began the survey expecting the glamorous nightscape that Minato Mirai is known for, the impact of these energy-saving measures was somewhat shocking. With symbolic lights extinguished, the balance of the nightscape was lost, reminding us that harmony is essential for urban nightscapes. At the same time, in Japan\u2019s ongoing pursuit of decarbonization, the balance between energy conservation and nightscape design will remain a long-term challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team member Dong commented on the Cosmo Clock\u2019s illumination, saying, \u201cWhat\u2019s interesting is that when it is off, your line of sight passes through it, revealing the nightscape beyond.\u201d Indeed, while Cosmo World closes at 8:00 p.m., the Cosmo Clock continues to stay lit until midnight for the sake of Minato Mirai\u2019s scenery. Perhaps after 8:00 p.m., it would be better to limit illumination to periodic, time-signal-like moments while leaving it unlit in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Minato Mirai is still in the process of development and the community\u3000is working together to build the city, we hope it will take pride as a future-oriented environmental city and create an energy-efficient nightscape that makes the most of its resources. ( Kouki Iwanaga)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tokyo River Tour: Nihonbashi River + Kanda River + Sumida River<\/strong>

The day after \u201cDay of Light\u201d, on October 22, we held a kids\u2019 workshop for the first time in about three years. Due to COVID-19, we had not been able to organize it, but this year we launched the project with the strong wish to resume.<\/p>\n\n\n

This workshop, titled \u201cRiver Tour Part 2,\u201d revisited the Nihonbashi River \u2013 Kanda River \u2013 Sumida River route that we first explored in 2016. The idea was to let children experience the nightscape of central Tokyo from the riverside perspective, something they rarely get to see.
On the day, 11 children and 15 adults including staff \u2014 25 participants in total \u2014 joined the river tour.<\/p>\n\n\n

The participants gathered at Nihonbashi as dusk settled, and the boat set sail, heading west along the Nihonbashi River. Since most of the Nihonbashi River is covered by the Shuto Expressway, there is little chance to see the open sky. From time to time, the orange glow of high-pressure sodium lamps leaked through from the expressway above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nihonbashi River is also lined with many bridges, ranging from old to newly built, so one can see plenty of the \u201cundersides\u201d of both bridges and the expressway. Responding to a suggestion from the Chief Mende \u2014 \u201cTry imagining how you would light these hidden sides to make them beautiful\u201d \u2014 the children used the flashlights we had brought to experiment with different illuminations. Most of the children were quite young, so they didn\u2019t think too deeply about how to shine the light, but when they directed it at the dark water surface, shimmering reflections danced across the riverbank. They delighted in the accidental play of light that appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the boat approached the Kanda River, the expressway that had been overhead disappeared, the sky opened up, and the lights of riverside buildings and shops, which had been difficult to see until then, became clearly visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the workshop was held on a Saturday, the office buildings had little light, but as we traveled, we enjoyed the glow from the trains running overhead near Suidobashi and Ochanomizu Stations.
Along the way, the boat approached the pitch-dark Ochanomizu diversion channel near Suidobashi, where the children experimented by shining their flashlights into the darkness and calling out loudly to hear their voices echo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the boat moved closer to the Kanda River, the expressway overhead disappeared, the sky opened up, and the lights from riverside buildings and shops, which had previously been hard to see, became clearly visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous sights often seen in photos, such as the Ochanomizu Cut and Hijiri Bridge, were not very visible due to ongoing construction around Ochanomizu Station, but in the Asakusabashi area, the participants were able to see many houseboats moored along the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the boat exited the Kanda River and merged into the Sumida River, the participants saw the Tokyo Skytree illuminated in an unusual blend of green and light blue, different from its usual lighting. Unlike the Nihonbashi and Kanda Rivers, the Sumida had waves, so the river cruise became a slightly swaying experience. Although there were not many other boats, the variety of their lighting was interesting to observe. On the Sumida River, large bridges such as Ryogoku Bridge, Shin-Ohashi Bridge, Kiyosu Bridge, Sumida-Ohashi Bridge, and Eitai Bridge spanned the water, each illuminated with distinctive colors and lights. For the children, who had rarely experienced such large-scale light-ups, the dynamic displays were fascinating to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After about 90 minutes, the cruise ended by returning to the Nihonbashi River. By the end, the air had grown quite chilly, but the river tour seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. As a small \u201chomework,\u201d the children were asked to later send in a photo and a short comment about what left the deepest impression on them, after which the group dispersed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hope that this river cruise will remain in the children\u2019s memories as an \u201cadventure of light\u201d unlike anything they experience in daily life, and that it will spark even a small curiosity about light in their everyday surroundings.
