With candles lit in the hand-held lanterns, we waited for the boat by straining our eyes against the dark sea for several minutes. As the distant sound of the rowers' vigorous drums and chants, along with the elegant notes of the traditional Gagaku music, became audible and the faint glow of bonfires and tall lanterns came into view, we swayed our lanterns to welcome the approaching boat.
