Date: June 23, 2012 “Turn off the lights and take it slow.” The Lighting Detectives became involved with the Candle Night Event in 2003, starting on Harajuku Cat Street. We then moved the annual event to Omotesando in 2005 and now 10 years later, a total of 345 staff members, including local art university students, Lighting Detective members, and day-of-the-event volunteers are needed to stage the one-night event. Candlenight@OMOTESANDO-Eco Avenue Our goal and particularly important part of the event this year is the continuation of charity donations and an event that includes the local flavor of Omotesando. It has been one year since the massive earthquake and tsunami destroyed parts of North-Eastern coastline of Japan; the donations collected at the 2012 Candle Night will also go towards this recovery and needs of the disaster victims. Event staff, volunteers, and university students set up tables near the candle installations along Omotesando to collect donations and sell homemade candles, with all proceeds to be donated. On the day of the event donations were collected for 3-hours from 7pm to 10pm for a total of \205,278!! This year, along with the conventional candle installations we also included a gallery event showcasing some of the fantastic original lanterns designed by local art university students and a panel of judges. Also, in coordination with a local bamboo lantern festival, lanterns carved from bamboo were also arranged along Omotesando. Visitors enjoyed the conventional Candle Night event…

This unprecedented disaster has taken many lives and livelihoods, leaving scarred land and hearts of the people. However, many have risen beyond this challenge and are beginning the long road to rebuilding what they have lost. We have been touched by their courageousness, and would like to express our continued support by organizing this Charity Candle Night. Candle Night Summer Solstice 2010 @ Omotesando – Eco Avenue

More

Candle Night Summer Solstice 2010 June 19, 2010 “Turn off the lights and take it slow.” This is the campaign slogan for Candle Night, a movement started in 2003 on the summer solstice by an environmental NPO. Nationally, the event is unofficially planned for the summer and winder solstices, and persistence from local groups have turned it into a huge event to enjoy a different kind of evening by candlelight. Candlenight@OMOTESANDO-Eco Avenue Candle Night along Omotesando was held for two hours on June 19th, 2010 from 8pm to 10pm in the evening. The Harajuku / Omotesando Candle Night started on the 2003 winter solstice. This year marks the 10th event along the popular shopping street. The theme for 2010 summer solstice was “Encounters with Candles x LEDs.” In contrast to candles, which have been used for hundreds and hundreds of years, LEDs are the latest gadget in optical technology. This year visitors encountered hybrid installations using both candles and LEDs along the zelkova lined street. For the event, 611 staff members, mostly art university students in the Tokyo precinct, were recruited and collaborated to present a unified, coexistence of warm candlelight and techno LED installations. Candle Installations The theme this year was “Encounters with candle x LED,”so it wasn`t just candle light along the street, but a combination of candles and LEDs for a variety of installations. Installations included, stacked wine glasses with candles inside and softly emitted blue LED…

June 21, 2008 Sumer Solstice This was the 5th Annual Candlenight along Omotesando since the event was moved from nearby Cat Street. “Turn off the lights and take it slow” is the catch phrase for this familiar candle event. Two Japanese environmental NGO first proposed Candlenight as an opportunity to take another look at our modern lifestyles. Every year on the summer solstice from 8pm to 10pm this event reminds us to turn off the lights and reflect on our lives by enjoying the night in candlelight. Nationwide there are 938 individual candle events as part of this promotion. The theme for this years Lighting Detectives Candlenight @ Omotesando-Eco Avenue was “Dialogue: Dialogue with the Shadows, Dialogue with the Light.” As every year, local art university students and others gratuitously volunteered to help with the event, including the Omotesando Candle Cafe Network, candle installations along Omotesando, and original lantern making. We started with a kick-off meeting in February and used the next five months to prepare for this one-night event in June. Producers for the Omotesando event included Lighting Detectives Chief, Kaoru Mende, cultural anthropologist, Shinichi Takemura, and, as a special guest, graphic designer, Taku Satoh, all of who participated in each meeting. Each team presented their candle installation ideas, receiving advice and critics from the gallery. As the event neared and projects took shape, the weather report was not as cooperative, forecasting rain. But, after so many hours of…

June 22, 2007 Sumer Solstice “Turn off the lights and take it slow.” Candle Night, a environmental and energy conservation event that also focuses on habits of the modern lifestyle and finding ones inner sense of time, is the brainchild of a environmental NGO. During the one night event, main building facilities are “lit down” and in different areas of the country candlelight events are held, and keep growing each year. According to the official Candle Night web site, this year over a three-day period from June 22 to June 24, 897 candlelight events were recorded. The Lighting Detectives have been involved with this event since our first candle event along Harajuku Cat Street in 2003. In 2005, we moved our event to Omotesando to attract a larger crowd. Participants originally heard of the event by word of mouth from Chief Kaoru Mende, but have grown to involve students from area art universities, other business professionals and members of the Lighting Detectives. Including volunteers for the day of the event, staff has grown to over 300 persons. The “Candle Night @ Omotesando – Eco Avenue” event includes a schedule of three activities for the night. First the event is off to an energetic start with the candle parade down Omotesando by the children of the Jingu-mae Elementary School located behind Omotesando Hills. CANCELED: Candle Night Winter Solstice 2006

More

Candle Night @ Omotesando, scheduled for December 21, 2006, has been canceled. It is unfortunate that this annual December event, started in 2003 along Cat Street, will not be held this winter solstice. Instead of holding this event twice a year, once in December and again in June, we have decided to concentrate all of our efforts on the summer solstice, maybe event making it a more festive event than before. The “Turn off the lights and take it slow” campaign competes with Christmas retail and the festive nature of Omotesando during this season. This year Omotesando is also planning a grand, month-long lighting event, Eco Avenue, which will make it even harder to create interest for the Candle Night event. In conjunction with the Community Planning Board for Omotesando the Candle Night event will be held on the summer solstice only. We thank you for your understanding and continued support to make the Omotesando summer event bigger and better than ever. However, the Candle Night event will still be held nationwide on the winter solstice and we encourage all our friends at Candle Night @ Omotesando to take it slow, and enjoy your own private candle light on this night and others. See you again next summer!! Candle Night @ Omotesando Planning Committee Kaoru Mende

June 22, 2006 Summer Solstice Candle Night @ Omotesando – Eco Avenue The biannual Candle Night event was held again this year on June 21st along Omotesando. This event, started by an environmental NGO, has grown to include over 500 separate candle events held on the summer and winter solstics throughout Japan. The Lighting Detectives originally held their event along Cat Street, but has since moved to Omotesando. This was the third time to hold the candle event along Omotesando. Each event is somewhat trial and error and expanding on what works, but also adding new items to keep the candle-based event interesting. Shop fronts along Omotesando were borrowed for the always impressive candle installations and designated cafes in the vicinity took part in the Candle Cafe Network.. Also not to be forgotten, the Jingumae Elementary School Students in “Kids on Parade with Recycled Candles,” moving light along Omotesando. All three aspects to the night’s event were available for viewing from 8 o’clock to 10 o’clock. Kids Candle Parade The kid’s parade kicked off the night’s events as the procession started from Jingu Bridge. Candle in hand, the students held on tight to a candle each had crafted over the past week from old wax gathered from used-up candles and given new life in the form of recycled candles. As the candles burned down the kids excitedly chattered about their candles. “Look at mine!!” “Mine’s the prettiest!!” “The melted wax looks…

Candle Night Winter Solstice 2005: Lantern Light @ Omotesando

More

22 December 2005 It was a chilly winter night for the December 22, 2005 Candle Night event. Across the street from the new Otomesando Hills construction site in the final months of opening-day preparations, soft, warm light danced along the street at this festive, bi-annual event. Lantern Light This winter was the fifth time for the Lighting Detectives to be involved with Candle Night, a countrywide event. Since last summer, the local event has moved from Cat Street, a small side street connecting Harajuku and Shibuya, to the more visible stage of Omotesando. The catch-slogan for this event, “Turn off the lights and take it slow.” is a reflection of a movement to rethink our positions on the environment, energy conservation, and the modern lifestyle. The local Omotesando venue is a festive stage with individually designed lanterns taking center stage, as they are displayed and carried by volunteers up and down the street. Shopping-bag lanterns, zelkova tree motif lanterns, umbrella-shaped lanterns with reflecting light, and even necklace-inspired lanterns…all the hard work of local university students. At 8pm a special promotion video on the huge, Jingumae Intersection digital display board kicked off the evening and grabbed the attention of those unfamiliar with the event. Zelkova Tree Light In front of the Oriental Bazaar, glowing, zelkova tree motif lanterns were lined up at the entrance to represent the rows of flourishing trees along Omotesando. Votive candles were placed on the bars of…

19 June 2005 “Turn off the lights and take it slow.” The time to turn off the lights and relax by candle night was once again upon us as the Lighting Detectives and Musashi Art University students collaborated with local elementary school students to celebrate another Candle Night on the 2005 summer solstice. Up until now the local event was limited to Harajuku`s Cat Street, but this year we have widen the venue and pulled the June 19th event out into the open of Omotesando. Started by an environmental NPO, this nation-wide event is a slow, relaxing time to reflect on human nature and rethink our positions on the environment, energy conservation, and the modern lifestyle. More then 20,000 venues all over the country participate in this “lighting down” event with 300 of those venues also displaying candle installations. With each biannual celebration the circle of light continues to grow. Children’s Lantern Parade Along with their parents, 50 or so children from the local Jingumae Elementary School and the local Omotesando trash detail crew, Green Bird, started off from the school on a lantern parade that would take them to a rendezvous point at the new Cartier Store construction site and then down to the Oriental Bazaar. Roman candle-shaped lanterns, made by the children, were first carried to the rendezvous point where the Chief of the Lighting Detectives, Kaoru Mende was waiting. The Roman candle lanterns were exchanged for shopping…

21 December 2004 Candle Night Performance “Turn off the Lights and Take it Slow.” This is the continuous theme for the Candle Night Event, now in its third season along Harajuku`s Cat Street. This event uses the earth’s natural “clock” the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, and the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, to help bring awareness to the natural flow of time. For the event, our hope was to turnout all the streetlights along Cat Street, to create a dark background for the candle installations. The city was unable to respond to this request, but shops along the street were cooperative and we succeeded in creating a darkened atmosphere for the event. A total of 11 installations were set up along the street. Most were student projects that have began to incorporated messages and other exciting tricks into their candle works. Some fun performances included a big “CHEERS!” with a candle beer glass and illuminated one-yen coin chains symbolizing the money spent on electricity. Creator Candle Design Exhibition The Creator Candle Design Exhibition was a new event added to this winter solstice performance. Ten designers designed candles to be displayed at the exhibit. Naoto Fukazawa and Takashi Sato are just a couple of designers who willing donated their time and work to the exhibit. Even though all who participated were professional designers, candle design was a first. Designing a candle is not just…

20 June 2004 What is Candle Night? This is the second season for the Lighting Detectives to participate in the Bi-annual Candle Night Performance. This event uses the earth’s natural “clock” the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, and the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, to help bring awareness of the natural flow of time.
