Reiko KasaiLighting Design ProducerSingapore I am now cramped in a packed economy class flight from Bangkok back to Singapore with my laptop open. I am amazed at the number of people passing through the airport. The reason this scene feels like a dream is that I am still vividly remembering my flight from Japan only a year ago, when the airport was deserted, and I was the only passenger. On the return “private” flight from Haneda to Singapore, I enjoyed strolling around the cabin, chatting and playing cards with the five amiable cabin crew members who were working for just one passenger. The anxiety of the mandatory 21-day hotel stay that awaited me after landing had disappeared. Once again, I was the sole passenger on the bus that ferried me from the empty and lonely Changi Airport, where there were more staff in protective suits than passengers. I was nervous because I was not told where we were going, but we arrived at a high-rise 5-star hotel with a balcony in the center of the city. My prior fearful and pessimistic imaginings – 21 days isolation in the locked hotel room, boredom, stagnation, ill-health, and madness – were completely misled as I spent the next 21 days in peace, comfort, leading healthy regulated time schedule, and happiness. Shomei Tanteidan Salon Review of the Kamata night walk 2017/09/06　Noriko Higashi We had a review of Kamata-town walking which held on the Premium Friday in the midsummer, when the town flourishes the most. How was the impression of night in Kamata? Discussion was carried out with 18 participants. Group leader presented the summary of the walk. Many opinions came from the first participants as well. Slide comparing the streets around the west exit of the station. Eatery with Showa feeling was unanimously selected as a hero. Internally illuminated panel in the entrance of the arcade became a hero with soft coloring Every member in the group thought the park in the residential area was a hero. When I asked participants about the impression of Kamata, there were opinions saying “A place that doesn’t bother to go, and hasn’t been explored yet”, “There are many Pachislot and Pachinko stores jumbling around, but doesn’t have bold flashiness like Kabukicho”, “Very convenient for being able to use 4 lines”, “Yuzawaya”. How did these change or didn’t change after the walking? The characteristic of Kamata mentioned in the salon was “active town that is very lived-in feel and prospers with many people at night.” I didn’t see lightings with unified design, but many of the lightings that coming out from restaurants and stores were attractive and called out for a long way, which was not uncomfortable at all. Singapore Night Walk＠Marina Bay Urban Nightscape 2018/03/28　　Mayumi Banno + Sunyoung Hwang + Sherri Goh From the completion of land reclamation in 1992, Marina Bay has grown and developed into Singapore’s iconic skyline. With skyscrapers, heritage buildings and a spectacular water-show lined along the Waterfront Promenade, there is no lack of personality in the well executed Masterplan from URA. Members of ligthing detectives held Singapore’s first night walk to hunt for the heroes and villains of light in Marina bay as well as peeking into the current iLight installations along the way. Group Sherri Group Mayumi Group Sunyoung ■Singapore Night Walk 1: Urban Nightscape – Marina Bay Singapore just held their first Lighting Detectives Night Walk with the theme of Urban Nightscape and it was opened to members of the public. There were 18 people that turned up at the meeting spot Rain Oculus at Marina Bay Sands on the 28th March 2018, 1900h. We started our walk slightly late while waiting for the heavy rain to subside and started the self-introductions as well as Lighting Detectives on the international stage. Our first foray as Heroes and Villains was to look at the Financial centre together with Fullerton Promenade as a macro perspective. Does the border of lighting exist in Kamata? We devided JR Kamata line area into four parts and researched them. Bourbon road that has the Showa feeling Teaching tips of night walk for 5 people participating first time Entrance of the Sunrise Road, arcade goes through for 400 meters ■Group 1: JR Kamata Station-West exit, Tokyu line Group 1 went from Granduo West Building→400 meters arcade, “Sunrise Kamata” →”Sun Road”, place where canopy was first provided in 1965→”Bourbon Road” which has many attracting restaurants. Members were surprised of how dark it was around the entrance of the station when they came out from the West Bldg. There were no light dust on neither on the road nor vertical surface, and it was about 10 lux. Down lights under the eaves were not lighting up. Many people felt lighting should improve for safety and reassurance. On the Tokyu Plaza Façade in front of the station, there was an advertisement with LED emitting strong light, and a banner advertisement. However, there were some opinions saying lighting quantity of a banner advertisement was way less than the other lighting of advertisement, and was not so effective. 2022.10.27　Genki Watanabe+ Chuanyi Liu+ Yuki Ito This Tokyo night walk survey took place in Shimokitazawa, a neighborhood especially popular among young people. Known as one of Tokyo’s most culturally rich districts, the area is filled with vintage clothing shops, eateries, theaters, niche cinemas, and art galleries.The Lighting Detectives previously conducted a survey here in 2009. This time, we examined how the area has changed since the Odakyu Line was relocated underground. We also focused on the newly developed Shimokita Senrogai area, which opened on May 28, 2022, assessing its lighting design and comparing it with the older shopping streets to explore the contrast between new and traditional urban atmospheres. ■Map around Shimokitazawa Station With the Odakyu Line moved underground, a new neighborhood called Shimokita Senrogai was developed between Higashi-Kitazawa Station and Setagaya-Daita Station. Driven by the desire to support the community, redevelopment progressed step-by-step while listening to local residents’ voices. The entire area officially opened on May 28, 2022.Alongside the railway line, new facilities such as daycare centers, a hot spring inn, commercial spaces, student dormitories, and event venues were established. ■Development of Shimokita Senrogai The Shimokita Senrogai area we surveyed is a newly developed space created by moving the Odakyu Line underground. It was designed with the intention of reconnecting the northern and southern parts of the neighborhood that had previously been divided by the railway tracks, resulting in developments that encourage smooth pedestrian circulation throughout.
