■Light Up Ninja Returns 2014.08.29-08.30＠School of the Arts Singapore (West Plaza Steps) Following a successful run of last year light up Ninja Event, this year was held in conjunction with National heritage board as part of the　Singapore Night Festival . This year theme was to encourage participants to “Come play with Light and Shadow” with some inspiration　from the summer festivals of Japan. It is held at local art school, School of the Arts (SOTA) which is also in the bustling art district of Bras Basah at the town area. The day of the event Many people visited the venue, School of the Arts Singapore Event poster The day of the event Over 40 members of lighting detectives and volunteers gathered at the location at 3pm on the first day, to have a run through of the flow of events over the next 2 days. After which we split into our respective to begin preparation work, expecting the event to start at 7.30pm. Even before the time, there are many passerby curious to what is the event about, and we have started to engage them. The turnout was better than expected as there was a period of heavy rain during the first day of the event, still the mood was not dampened after the rain. As there are many people queuing at the different installations that we have prepared when the rain had stopped, it is very encouraging for the detectives!…

Written by Acharawan ChutaratLighting DesignerBangkok There is still the bright side in every dark situation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.  At least, it has brought up opportunities for our friends of light to become closer, to share ideas, and to learn from each other by online communications.  Enlighten Asia 2021* keeps us connected.  Thank you Mr.Mende to think about us.  Since April 2021, the situation in Bangkok has been worsened until the time I am writing this article.  KMUTT has announced the temporary closure of all campuses in Bangkok from July 12, 2021, and uses online teaching/learning throughout semester 1/2021.  It means no official face-to-face activities until December 2021.  However, our students insisted to join the lighting workshop and expressed their passion that I can feel.  Students have made good progress in their own way which I very much enjoy working with them.  We adapted ourselves for learning. First, site selection, since we have limited access to sites, we discussed selecting sites they have been surveyed from previous classes that fit their interest. It strengthens their urban design class through different issues at night. Second, students had a chance to conduct observation skills for heroes and villains with my guidance before a worse situation.  Real experience is still important.  Third, we have learned from Tsinghua University, which is one of the schools that participate in this workshop, on data collection through different tools such as microblog, Baidu heatmap, Instagram using…

2023.08.02 – 2023.08.04　Yumi Honda＋Sachiko Segawa The theme of this survey is “lighting on boats since ancient times”. Cormorant fishing on the Nishiki River in Iwakuni has been practiced for about 400 years. The Kangensai Festival at Miyajima Island has been held since the Heian period (794-1192). We investigated the relationship between water, light, and people in these two different areas. ■Iwakuni　The Light of Cormorant Fishing, an Ancient Fishing MethodCormorant fishing has been practiced on the Nishiki River in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, for about 400 years. The cormorant fishing is still enjoyed today by taking a pleasure boat ride from the foot of Kintai-kyo Bridge, one of the three most famous bridges in Japan. The day we visited was a weekday in mid-summer, and the daytime crowds were sparse, but in the evening, people began to gather along from somewhere the riverbank and board the cormorant fishing boats. In western Japan in summer, it is still light even at 18:00. Looking at the sightseeing boats from the bridge, I could see people enjoying a party on the boats with lanterns hanging down. As it gradually got darker and the lights of Kintai-kyo Bridge and lanterns along the river were lit up, we slowly waited for the cormorant fishing time to start. 2022.11.4-5 Sachiko Segawa Surprisingly, this survey of the Sawara district marks the first time the Lighting Detectives have conducted an investigation within Chiba Prefecture. The team focused on an area designated both as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings and as a Landscape Formation District. Here, the townscape of merchant houses, which flourished from the Edo period thanks to river transport on the Tone River, still remains. Located about 70 km from Tokyo Station and slightly inland from the Tone River, the Sawara district of Katori City once thrived as a merchant town, to the point it was said to rival Edo itself. However, the town declined during Japan’s period of rapid economic growth. Following a townscape survey in 1974, the value of its historic scenery was reappraised. Today, leveraging its convenient location—just two hours from Tokyo and one hour by train from Narita Airport—the area is being redeveloped as a tourist destination. Jacob Ballas Children`s Garden of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore 11 October 2008 Archifest08 + Light Up Ninja Junior In conjunction with ‘Archifest 08’ event sponsored by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the Lighting Detective Singapore Chapter held a new version of an old event, “Light Up Ninja Junior.” The last Light Up Ninja event was three years previous, but this Junior event is tailored towards children. We didn`t really know what to expect for young Lighting Detectives, but we did our best to prepare! Jacob Ballas Children`s Garden This was the first ever Lighting Detectives workshop tailored towards children, and if all goes smoothly, maybe a platform for other events to come. The first challenge was to agree upon a venue. Out of many possibilities, and with support from NParks, the Jacob Ballas Children`s Garden inside the Singapore Botanic Gardens was chosen. Light Up Ninja Junior Planning: Playing and Learning from Light Next, what kind of lighting event would be most intriguing for 30 children ages 4 to 10 years old? We tried to prepare an interesting, but simple event that would make light fun. The event came to center on hand-made lanterns by the children. After completion, the lanterns would be set around the garden for the children to experience the softly growing light in a dark environment.
