We tracked the light expression of Rio de Janeiro, a port city marked by both entertainment and poverty, which hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016 and has become increasingly international. While possessing famous coasts like Copacabana and Ipanema and being counted as one of the world’s three most beautiful harbors, it also has the “favela” slums covering its hillsides. Surrounded by magnificent nature, Santiago, Chile’s largest city, has annual rainfall of only about 360mm, meaning it is sunny for most of the year. We investigated the lighting situation of this city blessed with natural light. From up above Tokyo looks like an overturn jewelry box, the night streets glitter with lights and it a fairly beautiful sight. Once back on ground, the glitter has turned harsh. It is an economically advanced nightscape, an efficient nightscape with needless light and light pollution. An aerial view of Tokyo at night. The dark area in the center of Tokyo, the Emperor`s Palace, is surrounded by clusters of lights that resemble precious stones. From this view it is unclear where Tokyo begins or ends. The Tokyo nightscape is illuminated in bright white light. Mercury lamps and florescent lights in the background of Tokyo Tower control the nightscape of this city. Old-fashioned houseboats gather in the foreground of the Odaiba District and the Rainbow Bridge.

Kuala Lumpur is one of the major cities of Southeast Asia. Recent economic grow has transformed the city, with numerous skyscrapers now dotting the skyline. The outdoor market is a conglomeration of people who seem to naturally congregate here, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. The Petronas Twin Towers, a world-famous symbol of Kuala Lumpur, are brightly illuminated, almost to a dangerously intense level. However since the surrounding cityscape is very dark, the sight of the glowing towers creates an almost beautiful nightscape. Bukit Bintang is the predominant entertainment district in Kuala Lumpur. The area is a showcase for many different lighting methods, but without uniformity. An assortment of lighting elements was my first impression on a walk down the street. Away from the center of the city, Titiwangsa Park is a popular nightscape viewing spot for young couples. Even at this distance the Twin Tower’s reflection on the surface of the lake is a powerful reminder of its overwhelming presence.

Students Candle Night Winter Solstice 2005…Saiko Tanuma Nihonbashi & Sumidagawa Riverwalk After a little bit of a dry spell, the Lighting Detectives gathered once again for the usual and unusual round table discussion at the Shibuya Headquarters. With so many events to report, the night started off with the most recent city walk, a chartered boat tour up the Nihonbashi and Sumidagawa Rivers. Seeing the city lights from the river is always exciting and a hot discussion of lighting pros and cons kept the river rats entertained. Light Up Ninja, Singapore Chief of the Lighting Detectives, Kaoru Mende, also reported on the first Light Up Ninja event in Singapore. The two-day workshop was held in November of last year at Singapore`s Duxton Plain Park. From the event photographs, participants of all ages were enthusiastic and creative in their lighting designs. Japanese City Lighting Survey The night continued with reports from our series on Japanese cities with lighting surveys from Kyoto and Kobe. Kyoto is always a beautiful city to view, but even the simplest street lights reflecting off the rain drenched streets added a mystical element to the photographs. The cherry blossoms have fallen and scattered and the riverside before my eyes grows over in a mixture of shades of green. The smells of new green leaves and the scent of spring coming to an end rides on the breeze. It is a rare Sunday with no work or business trips, just fine weather. As I was watching the surface of the water along the Sumida River, I heard a little voice “Have you forgotten about your Detective Note?” So pitiful, I can`t even remember the last time I wrote a Detective Note…. So, I apologize and I have decided to write down a few simple thoughts. The topic this time is the chemistry between twilight and an oil lamp. Before my trip to Vietnam last week, I took a few pictures in my rooftop garden. Just as I was lighting an oil lamp for the dinner table, across the river, the evening sky was a beautiful gradation in the full blue moment. At my house, we like to enjoy the start of the evening with drinks and appetizers outside, then come in for the main dish. I don`t think I even need to explain how great this slow, relaxing and rambling time before the main course feels. Alfresco dining with a slight breeze and the last light of the day is the best.
