Tokyo River Tour: Nihonbashi River + Kanda River + Sumida River2022.10.22　　Sachiko Segawa + Mami Kono + Noriko Higashi The day after “Day of Light”, on October 22, we held a kids’ workshop for the first time in about three years. Due to COVID-19, we had not been able to organize it, but this year we launched the project with the strong wish to resume. This workshop, titled “River Tour Part 2,” revisited the Nihonbashi River – Kanda River – Sumida River route that we first explored in 2016. The idea was to let children experience the nightscape of central Tokyo from the riverside perspective, something they rarely get to see.On the day, 11 children and 15 adults including staff — 25 participants in total — joined the river tour. The participants gathered at Nihonbashi as dusk settled, and the boat set sail, heading west along the Nihonbashi River. Since most of the Nihonbashi River is covered by the Shuto Expressway, there is little chance to see the open sky. From time to time, the orange glow of high-pressure sodium lamps leaked through from the expressway above. The Nihonbashi River is also lined with many bridges, ranging from old to newly built, so one can see plenty of the “undersides” of both bridges and the expressway. Date: September, 2004 Program: City Tour, Symposium Venue: Freie Akademie der Kunste It was the beginnings of autumn in the beautiful port city of Hamburg, where the forum was held this year. The dome-shaped hall, Freie Akademie der Kunste, conveniently location near Central Station, was illuminated by soft light creating a pleasant atmosphere for all present. Hamburg, located in northern Germany, with easy access to and from Scandinavia made it possible for participants from Copenhagen to also join in the fun. The forum, continuing from last year, was again, well attended with about 150 persons registered. This year was also a little different with a pianist performing in between sessions. The theme this year was “Daily Transportation Facilities”, meaning public transportation used everyday to get to and from school and work. The core members from six different countries reported on what kind public transportation was used in their area and the lighting environment of these facilities. Kaoru Mende presented details and pictures of how Tokyoites endure the grinding morning rush day in and day out. Pictures of squeezing more people into an already packed train got a good roar from the crowd. Also, scenes from around main stations, such as Tokyo and Shinjuku, lined with shops and billboards, relayed how stations in Japan are closely tied with commercialism. Lighting Detectives Workshop in iLight Marina Bay 16.03.05-03.27　Quratuaini bte Jamil Each was a unique artwok module Lighting Detectives has been collaborating with iLIGHT Marina bay 2016 for our workshop. The theme for this year’s iLIGHT was In Praise of Shadows. This theme also coincides with our lighting design philosophy- being sensitive and appreciating shadows. Through this workshop, we hoped that everyone could appreciate light and shadow. We made a gigantic lantern comprised of little modules of artworks by participants and it was displayed as part of this iLIGHT 2016 event. This journey itself took an immense amount of effort. ■Collecting Materials (Collecting Mess). We hit a bump at first on where to outsource all of these materials. We were encouraged to use recycled materials such as toilet rolls, egg cartons, A1 printer rolls and wine corks. All of us collected materials from many places; cafes, schools, hotels, printer shops or just by walking around clothing shops of streets of Singapore. As the event time drew closer, abundance of materials came pouring into our office. We barely had space to walk past our office corridor! ■Endless Brainstorming. Our endless ideas came about two months ago, where we had many ideas of our own outlook on praising shadows keeping in mind to utilise items that we had collected so far. ■Light Up Ninja Returns 2014.08.29-08.30＠School of the Arts Singapore (West Plaza Steps) Following a successful run of last year light up Ninja Event, this year was held in conjunction with National heritage board as part of the　Singapore Night Festival . This year theme was to encourage participants to “Come play with Light and Shadow” with some inspiration　from the summer festivals of Japan. It is held at local art school, School of the Arts (SOTA) which is also in the bustling art district of Bras Basah at the town area. The day of the event Many people visited the venue, School of the Arts Singapore Event poster The day of the event Over 40 members of lighting detectives and volunteers gathered at the location at 3pm on the first day, to have a run through of the flow of events over the next 2 days. After which we split into our respective to begin preparation work, expecting the event to start at 7.30pm. Even before the time, there are many passerby curious to what is the event about, and we have started to engage them. The turnout was better than expected as there was a period of heavy rain during the first day of the event, still the mood was not dampened after the rain. As there are many people queuing at the different installations that we have prepared when the rain had stopped, it is very encouraging for the detectives!…

– From Industrial Zone to Japan’s Leading Tower Mansion City –2024.10.04 Yutaka Enomoto + Yuko Nakayama + Noriko Higashi Musashi-Kosugi, a major transportation hub served by the Tokyu Toyoko Line, Meguro Line, JR Nambu Line, Yokosuka Line, Shonan-Shinjuku Line, and the Sotetsu Line, offers convenient access to both Yokohama and Tokyo. Over the past decades, the area has undergone rapid development, leading to a significant increase in its population. However, the station area still retains traditional shopping streets and izakaya districts, creating a striking contrast with the towering high-rise buildings. This walk focused on exploring the coexistence of these new and old elements of the area. Historically, Musashi-Kosugi flourished as a boat crossing on the Nakahara Kaido during the Edo period. Later, it became home to numerous factories. However, as these factories relocated, redevelopment plans were initiated, transforming the city’s landscape. The changes over the past decade have been particularly dramatic, with a population increase of 60,000 compared to 20 years ago. ■Group 1 Group 1 focused on exploring areas with a nostalgic atmosphere, including low-rise residential neighborhoods and traditional shopping streets. The shopping streets had implemented creative lighting installations to enhance the atmosphere. In particular, an “analog interactive lighting” system that lit up when a hand-operated handle was turned generated both positive and negative reactions.
